There are only two reasons why anyone buys car insurance: 1. you’re legally required to meet your state’s minimum requirements for coverage; and 2. so it’s there when you need it in the event of a claim.

Many consumers shopping for insurance focus on price as the principal consideration, which makes sense. Getting a good price is great, but every car insurance consumer should ask themselves two questions: 1. how do I know if I received the best price; and 2. can I trust that my insurance company will pay my claim if I experience a loss?

When it comes to insurance, paying a claim is where the rubber meets the road. Buying a cheap policy from an insurance company with a reputation for not paying claims fairly and quickly defeats the purpose of saving money.

Clearsurance has received more than 125,000 reviews from customers covering almost 500 U.S. personal lines insurance companies.

Below are the claim rankings, based exclusively on consumer reviews of the top 10 largest car insurance companies in the United States by market share. (Note: The claims rating doesn’t include companies that are grouped under the parent company for market share purposes. For example, Safeco’s data isn’t included in Liberty Mutual’s rating even though Safeco is owned by Liberty Mutual Group).

See where your company rates and ranks based upon whether other consumers have had a positive claim experience, and use this information the next time you renew or shop for car insurance. If you’re using an agent, ask your agent for a complete list of the insurance companies they represent and make sure you’re not receiving quotes, even cheap ones, from companies that rank poorly for paying claims. Not having peace of mind that your insurance company has your back is not worth saving a few bucks.

What leads to a positive claims experience?

Within the reviews written by consumers describing their claims experience with one of these 10 insurance companies, many referenced the speed and ease in which their claim was handled. In fact, speed and ease had the highest correlation with a positive claims service experience and rating.

Of the 1,493 USAA claims reviews for car insurance, 36.8 percent used words to describe how fast their claim was handled and/or how easy the process was. This was the highest percentage of any of the top 10 companies, and not surprisingly USAA topped the list with a 4.70 claims rating out of 5.

Conversely, Liberty Mutual, which had the lowest claims rating amongst the top 10 by market share, also had the lowest percentage of consumers commenting on the speed and ease of the claims process with the company.

In total, 54 percent of policyholders describing a positive claims experience also used words to describe speed in their review. The companies with the lowest claims ratings weren’t described as slow, they simply don’t seem to handle the claims as fast and as easy as the companies ranking the highest according to consumer feedback.

Do agents or online services make a noteworthy difference?

Four of the 10 companies on this list — Allstate, American Family, Farmers and State Farm, have a network of captive agents, meaning agents that only represent that one company. Based on the data, there doesn’t seem to be a correlation between companies with an agent network performing better or worse than companies without an agent network.

When it comes to online services, we also didn’t see a noteworthy trend between the frequency of online services mentioned for a company and higher or lower rating for a company. Although, there does appear to be at least some correlation between online services and ease. The companies with the highest frequency of reviews mentioning the ease of the claims process were also the same companies with a higher frequency of reviews commenting on the companies’ online services.

Each of these 10 companies offers the ability to file a claim online or through a mobile app, but the discrepancy in how often reviewers mentioned the company’s online services suggest some insurers have strides to make. But as mentioned before, few mentions of online services doesn’t necessarily mean a poor claims experience. In fact, American Family, which ranks second with a claims service rating of 4.42, had the lowest percentage of reviews mentioning the company’s online services when describing their experience.
