When shopping for insurance, you want to make sure you buy a policy from a company that is competitively priced, reliable, and offers you adequate coverage. The price of the insurance policy is the biggest consideration for most customers when deciding on a particular insurance provider. Clearsurance rankings are based exclusively on customer reviews and ratings across multiple value-based categories cusch as price, service and claims adjudication and processing. The customer reviews and ratings speak for themselves in determining which companies are the best for 2021, all while taking all of those factors into consideration.
What makes an insurance company among the “best” companies?
Clearsurance evaluated companies on a number of factors based on the things that matter with the weightings below*:
- Price rating (50%)
- Overall experience rating (25%) and
- Customers’ likelihood to recommend the company to a friend (25%)
Please note that our algorithm was changed slightly this year from previous year’s rankings.
Based on customer feedback, Clearsurance has weighted importance of price even more heavily than in past years for 2021. Customers consistently mention price as an essential factor in deciding which insurance to purchase. When customers write a review on Clearsurance, they are asked to rate the company’s price, which takes into account each customer’s perception of price.

Our best car insurance ranking for 2021 is a mix of national and regional carriers. There are also a few noteworthy nuances to highlight:
- USAA is consistently ranked highly by customers on Clearsurance.com. USAA is only available to military members and their families, so make sure to check if you are eligible for coverage from USAA.
- Similarly, Meemic is membership based coverage available to those that are teachers, professors, or other school staff members.
- Metromile earned the 6th spot on the ranking this year. Metromile is unique because it is pay-per-mile car insurance designed to save drivers money. The less you drive, the more you may be able to save with Metromile. If you’re a low-mileage driver, be sure to check it out.

2021 Customers’ Choice Best Homeowners Insurance Companies

As noted above, USAA is only available for military members and their families, but is consistently a customer favorite on Clearsurance’s rankings. USAA is a popular choice for insurance and also very highly rated by its customers.
Lemonade Insurance is new to the ranking for homeowners insurance this year. In 2020, Lemonade held the number 1 ranking for renters insurance, but did not meet the minimum review count of 100 reviews to be considered for the home insurance ranking. This year, Lemonade meets the requirements and is ranked number 1 for home insurance, in addition to renters insurance. Lemonade is a newer market entrant to homeowners insurance compared to some others on the list, but is consistently rated highly by customers.

*Note on our 2021 rankings: Clearsurance compiled a list of the Top 10 insurance companies by product type across car, home, and renters insurance for 2021. The rankings are based solely on customer reviews submitted to Clearsurance.com. Companies must have at least 100 reviews for the product line by January 15, 2021 to be considered for the ranking. All companies that met this criteria were considered for the ranking and all accepted reviews were used to evaluate the companies. When writing a review, customers are asked to rate the company on a number of factors, including the price, overall experience, and likelihood to recommend the company.
