Hippo Insurance is revamping homeowners insurance to be more modern and provide the right amount of coverage for homeowners. Hippo claims its homeowners insurance costs up to 25 percent less than other homeowners insurance policies, and it covers more items in your home than a traditional policy.

Hippo, founded in 2015, is technically considered a managing general agency (MGA) as its policies are backed by other insurance companies, including TOPA insurance and Spinnaker Insurance Company. What does this mean? Hippo is still the company you deal with as the policyholder, but other insurance companies are the ones financially backing Hippo.

What makes Hippo different from other homeowners insurance companies

Hippo is unique from traditional homeowners insurance providers because its goal is to be faster, provide more modern coverage, and be the least expensive in the market. When filling out its online form to receive a quote, Hippo uses artificial intelligence to access public information about your home, so you waste less time trying to find out and enter information.

In a 2017 study, Hippo found that more than 60 percent of homeowners are underinsured. Hippo’s policies cover modern items like home electronics and smart appliances, and can include enhanced coverage for a home office. Additionally, Hippo works to get in front of possible damages to your home, and provides a free water-leak sensor in its policies (not available in all states).

How it works and what makes Hippo so efficient

Hippo advertises a quote takes just 60 seconds, and the form is limited to a few simple questions. Hippo then uses its technology and artificial intelligence to search public records such as property records and even searches for aerial photography of the home to look at roof conditions. Hippo saves time and gains accuracy for the customer in utilizing this technology because most homeowners don’t know the details of their property off the top of their head when trying to get an online quote.

Hippo’s main focus when insuring its policyholders is prevention. Hippo uses artificial intelligence and aerial photography to assess the risk of things like wildfires and hurricanes for a homeowner, and the current state of their roof. Hippo’s AI technology also keeps track of building permits for its policyholders, so it can let its policyholders know if they need to update their coverage as they change their home.

Hippo also provides its policyholders with a free water leak sensor, and the opportunity to purchase a Notion Smart Home Starter Kit, which qualifies policyholders for Hippo’s Smart Home discount. The Notion sensor detects motion and temperature changes in a home, windows and garage doors opening and closing, and can set off alarms.
