USAA Insurance is one of the most popular and highly rated insurance companies in the United States, but USAA eligibility is only available to military members and their families. USAA offers a range of insurance options that are diverse since they want individuals who are affiliated with the military to choose USAA for all of their insurance needs from car insurance to life insurance or renters insurance.

Are you or one of your family members affiliated with the military? If so, you may be qualified for USAA insurance. Read on to see what the membership eligibility requirements are for USAA insurance and financial products.

USAA eligibility - Can you get USAA insurance?

USAA is only available to active and former military members and their families, but there are certain USAA eligibility guidelines.

You are eligible for a USAA membership if you are active duty, National Guard or Reserve, a veteran with an “Honorable” type of discharge from the U.S. military, an eligible family member, or a cadet or midshipman. In order to be eligible for USAA insurance, you must join as a USAA member.

If a parent who was affiliated with the military has a USAA membership, their adult children (step-children or biological children) are also allowed to reap the benefits of USAA insurance and other services, as long as that parent is an official member of USAA. The grown child of the parent recipient of USAA is also allowed to pass the insurance and other benefits along to their spouse and children.

Additionally, individuals who are widows or widowers of the USAA recipient can remain members of USAA unless they remarry. There are conditions, however, to be a member of USAA. The main member of USAA must be alive in order for the spouse or children (both stepchildren and biological children) to apply to become a member of USAA.

USAA insurance understands the importance of family to a military member, which is why they encourage the military member's immediate, direct family to be a part of the insurance plan. However, there are individuals who are not eligible for USAA membership and insurance coverage. USAA eligibility cannot be passed to, cousins, parents, or other non-immediate family members of the military member.

How do you become a USAA member?

A USAA membership is free. Once you have an account, you are eligible for USAA's insurance and other benefits. To become a member, you can visit USAA’s website to begin the process.

The steps are to first determine your USAA eligibility. You will need the following information to verify eligibility:

  • Personal information including your date of birth, contact information, and Social Security number
  • Details about you or your family member's military service
  • A passport or permanent resident card if you are a non-US citizen

You cannot become a USAA member if your military family member is not a member of USAA. The only way to become a part of USAA is if your military-affiliated family member is first a member of USAA and is able to pass USAA eligibility on to you.
