Do you want to save up to 20 percent on your car insurance? Travelers offers a driver tracking program called IntelliDrive that can help you earn savings on your auto insurance with Travelers.

Travelers' usage-based software system, IntelliDrive tracks your driving performance for 90 days via a mobile app, monitoring the time of day you drive, your speed, acceleration, and braking. Safe driving habits can earn you a discount but be careful because risky driving can result in an insurance premium increase. Like most auto insurance companies, they previously provided a plug-in device option but brought a new program as a mobile app software system.

Does this sound like something you would be interested in? Even if you already have an insurer, there is such a wide variety of companies out there, that it doesn't hurt to look around, especially if you're trying to be a safer driver. If you'd like to comparison shop, try our free online quote tool. By taking action, you could not only become a better driver, but also potentially save money on your auto premiums. Travelers insurance is just one of the options out there.

How does Travelers IntelliDrive work?

IntelliDrive software system (or telematics program) tracks your driving behavior using a mobile app that works on iPhone 4s or newer with iOS 9 or newer and all Android mobile devices with cellular, Wi-Fi and GPS chips with OS Lollipop 5.1 or newer. Like most systems, the software runs in the background of your phone and automatically detects when you're driving. IntelliDrive collects your driving information for 90 days and gives you a star rating once you complete it. The rating is on a 5-star scale. However, many users say that a perfect score is almost impossible to achieve. The 90-day program has relatively a short period of time for data collection; longer time periods allow drivers to achieve better discounts by improving their driving habits over time.

Based on your score, you'll receive a discount of up to 20 percent that will be reflected in your policy premium at your next renewal. Your discount amount varies based on your driving behavior. Additionally, when you enroll in IntelliDrive, you receive an Enrollment Discount on your Travelers car insurance policy for the first policy term, just for participating in the program.

Be aware, though, that it is possible for your auto insurance rates to increase after using IntelliDrive. If you display riskier driving habits, as tracked by the app, your rates could increase. Moreover, if you are using your phone while driving, your score might go down. However, abandoning your distracted driving habits is not a bad thing at all. This can also have a big influence on teen driver safety, but for adults as well.

IntelliDrive monitors the driving of all drivers on your Travelers car insurance policy. All drivers need to have the Travelers usage-based software installed on their phones. If any driver doesn't install the app, Travelers may remove that driver from the program and that can affect your Enrollment Discount.

The app aims to only track a driving trip when you are the driver. However, if it incorrectly records a trip in which you were a passenger, you have 10 days to change it in the IntelliDrive app.

IntelliDrive is most accurate when you have location services and Wi-Fi on your phone turned on. Travelers says the app doesn't use much of your battery life. Though while you're taking a trip, it may use slightly more than when the app isn't tracking your driving.

After each driving trip you take, you can review a map of your trip details and your current star rating. The app collects data around the time of day you drive, your speed, acceleration, braking and your location. Location is not used to determine your car insurance discount, but it is used for research and development purposes. Data is no longer collected from the app once you’ve completed the 90 days. For more information, you can read the IntelliDrive Terms and Conditions. Be sure you know how your data could be used.

Can I opt out of the IntelliDrive program?

It's voluntary to participate in the IntelliDrive program if you're a Travelers car insurance policyholder in a state where the program is offered. But what happens if you try the program and aren't satisfied with it and you don't want it to affect your car insurance rates? There's a period you can opt out of the program and it won't affect your rates. However, if you opt out, you will lose your IntelliDrive Enrollment Discount.

In most states where software is available, you have 45 days from the day you enroll to opt out of the program and your IntelliDrive score won't affect your car insurance rates. In Kansas, you have 90 days to opt out for no effect on your premium and in Montana, you can opt out at any time for not effect. If you opt out after the 45th day (or 90th day in Kansas), your car insurance rates could still be affected by your IntelliDrive score at your next car insurance renewal.

What driving habits does IntelliDrive monitor?

In order to offer you a discount, the software monitors certain aspects of your driving behavior using a mobile app. The following four things are measured by IntelliDrive and affect your Travelers car insurance rates. 1. Time of day

Certain times of the day are safer to drive during than others. Usually, it’s believed to be riskier to drive late at night or in the early morning hours when it is dark. IntelliDrive monitors the times of day you drive, determines the risk levels, and contributes to your score. Driving during the day is better for your score.

2. Speed

Speeding is dangerous because it gives you less time to react to avoid an accident. Speeding is one of the risky behaviors IntelliDrive tracks. Maintaining safe driving speeds will help you earn a higher score and a higher IntelliDrive discount.

3. Acceleration

IntelliDrive monitors your acceleration and how smooth it is. Smoother acceleration is safer and also better for your car. It can help you earn a higher score.

4. Braking

The last thing IntelliDrive measures to issue you a score and a discount is your braking. Hard braking shows that you’re not paying attention as much as you should. Safer drivers have less hard braking events because they anticipate situations more. Hard braking can negatively affect your score and your IntelliDrive discount.

Where is IntelliDrive available?

IntelliDrive is available in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin.

While drivers who are enrolled in IntelliDrive can save up to 20 percent on their car insurance if they have safe driving habits, the discount amounts available may vary by state. In Florida, Travelers policyholders enrolled in IntelliDrive can only save up to 15 percent.

Users could also see a rate increase after using IntelliDrive if it's determined that the driver has riskier driving habits. This can happen in all states except Washington, DC, Maryland, Montana, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In these areas, risky driving habits won't cause your premiums to increase. So trying the software is virtually risk free.

Is IntelliDrive worth it?

Travelers policyholders can earn a significant discount on their car insurance with IntelliDrive. The discount amount depends on your driving habits tracked by the insurance app, but it could be up to 20 percent off your Travelers car insurance policy when you renew. Plus, you get an Enrollment Discount just for participating.

If you’re a safe driver, you could save money using IntelliDrive. However, it’s important to consider the fact that your car insurance rates could increase with IntelliDrive if you or drivers on your car insurance policy have risky driving habits or frequently drive late at night.
