What is Clearsurance?

At Clearsurance, we are developing a true, customer-first insurance marketplace where people can find the best insurance companies and products to meet their specific needs and unique buying preferences. Everything we do at Clearsurance is governed by our core values: 1) we are transparent; 2) we are authentic; 3) we are optimists; and 4) we are scrappy. Clearsurance is simplifying insurance shopping powered by customer generated reviews, ratings and data.

Clearsurance allows you to see what other insurance customers are saying about their insurance companies, and how those companies compare. This is possible thanks to the Clearsurance community, which is made up of thousands of honest, unbiased insurance consumers who have shared feedback on their real-life insurance experiences.

Our users have reviewed and rated their homeowners insurance, automobile insurance and renters insurance companies, factoring in everything from price and customer service to how quickly the company handles claims. All of these reviews serve as the basis for our Clearsurance rankings, which are generated by our proprietary algorithm. It determines a company’s score based on consumer ratings for the overall company and customer service, as well as their likelihood to recommend and renew with the company.

Clearsurance was started by a team of technology and insurance entrepreneurs who believe that insurance is just too confusing for consumers. Our beta prototype was released in December 2016, and, to be completely honest, we were unsure if people would care enough about insurance to take the time to share their experiences. But within twelve months, we realized our concerns were unfounded. By then, more than 50,000 people had taken the time to review and share their insurance experiences. The end result is that consumers have a more transparent way to learn about and find insurance.

Okay, but really, why should I bother with Clearsurance?

Let’s face it: insurance is confusing, and, very often, it’s expensive. And, legally, many of us are required to have it.

But not all insurance companies are the same. How do you know if you are paying a fair price, and if your car insurance or homeowners insurance company is reputable? And, most importantly, how can you be sure that your insurance company will be there for you when you need them most?

The best way to get honest answers to these questions? Ask the customers. They know the strengths and weaknesses of their insurance company, and how a company really performs when the pressure is on. And that’s exactly who you’ll find in the Clearsurance community: real insurance consumers, just like you. They’re providing you with unbiased and honest feedback and insights that you can’t find anywhere else.

How are insurance companies rated on Clearsurance?

Consistent with its mission towards greater transparency, Clearsurance does not keep its rating formulas in a black box. Our algorithm analyzes a range of inputs from our independent community of insurance consumers, including:

Customer service
Claim service
Likelihood to renew

The algorithm also takes into account the percentage of what policyholders say the company does well versus the percentage of what policyholders say the company could do better.

The Clearsurance customer ratings are derived entirely from customer reviews and ratings.

How are insurance companies ranked on Clearsurance?

Clearsurance provides insurance shoppers with a ranked list of the best insurance companies in each state, by each covered product line. The ranking is entirely based on the companies’ Clearsurance scores, which are derived from the ratings that customers give companies when they submit a review.

The following factors must be met in order for a company to appear on any of our rankings pages:

The company must have at least 25 reviews for that line of insurance (e.g. auto, home or renters insurance), and
The company must sell that type of insurance product (e.g. auto, home or renters insurance) in the state to appear on the state rankings list.

Clearsurance does not manipulate the order of those companies that appear on the rankings pages in any way. The only factor that affects a company’s position is the rating that the company earns from its customer reviews that have been published on the Clearsurance site.

How do we rank insurance agents and agencies?

For our rankings of agents and agencies, our algorithm analyzes a range of inputs from our independent community of insurance consumers, including:

Customer service
Advice and communication
Willingness to recommend to a friend

The Clearsurance agent and agency ratings and rankings are derived entirely from customer reviews and ratings.

How do we rank online marketplaces?

For our rankings of online marketplaces, our algorithm analyzes the average of the overall rating in all reviews submitted by reviewers who've used the online marketplace.

How do we calculate the reliability score for insurance companies?

The customer reliability score is comprised of three components:

The overall rating of the company where reviews with claims are weighted more (60%) than reviews without claims (40%);
The company’s Net Promoter Score (NPS);
The percentage policyholders who’ve indicated they are likely to renew their policy with the company.

The above three components are averaged with more weight given to the first component. Component 1 is weighted 40%, while components 2 and 3 are weighted 30%.

Is Clearsurance backed by an insurance carrier?

No. Clearsurance is a completely independent company providing unbiased ratings and reviews of insurance companies. We do not have any affiliation to any insurance companies or providers.

How does Clearsurance help insurance companies?

Clearsurance helps companies increase customer confidence in their brand by publishing independent customer ratings. Consumers are more likely to engage with your brand when shown a positive, independent customer rating.

Is there a fee to use Clearsurance?

No. Clearsurance is completely free to use. We provide unlimited access to insurance reviews and ratings from real policyholders. We encourage you to rate insurers, submit reviews and research insurance carriers, all at no cost to you.

What is Clearsurance doing with my information?

Clearsurance does not sell, share or disseminate the personal information that you provide.

The insurance-related information that you provide to Clearsurance is used to educate consumers and assist them in purchasing an insurance policy. Your review will help first-time insurance buyers make an informed decision when choosing an insurance provider, as well as provide information and tips to existing policyholders on how to improve their coverage.

Will my review be anonymous?

Clearsurance publishes only the user’s screen name with any user-generated review. All users may choose their own screen name, and are not required to share their full name with Clearsurance.

Why should I submit insurance reviews and ratings to Clearsurance?

Clearsurance immediately connects you to a network of insurance consumers who have shared information about their real-life insurance experiences. The information that you share about your homeowners insurance, auto insurance or renters insurance will help others make smarter insurance decisions. The more insurance reviews and ratings submitted by you and consumers like you, the more accurate Clearsurance’s rankings will be.

But those partnerships don’t affect our writing and editorial integrity, which are based on rigorous research. We will never take payment in exchange for a guarantee of a favorable review.

We don’t partner with every insurance provider out there, but we are proud that the information we provide is objective, balanced, and free. How do I submit content on Clearsurance?

What if I am unhappy with a review posted on Clearsurance? Can I ask that it be removed?

Clearsurance reserves the right to review, delete and/or modify any content that we believe is inappropriate or, in our sole discretion, violates our Terms of Use Terms of Use, Privacy Policy or any other Clearsurance policy. Clearsurance has no obligation to remove content for any other reason.

If you see a review or any content on Clearsurance that you believe violates our policies, you may report it by flagging it, contact us here or emailing us at info@clearsurance.com. We will review the content and consider whether to remove or modify it. Please note that any and all decisions about editing or removing content will be made at the sole discretion of Clearsurance.

An insurance company and/or agent/broker is asking me to write a review regarding my experience. Is this okay?

Yes, as long as the review that you write is accurate and factual, and consistent with our Terms of Use, Clearsurance has no problem with insurance providers, insurance companies, agents and brokers asking their customers to write reviews. In fact, we encourage it! However, insurance companies, brokers and agents may not force anyone to write reviews. The integrity of Clearsurance depends on your honest and unbiased opinions of the insurance industry.
