Brethren Mutual Insurance Company (BMIC) was established in 1897 in Hagerstown, Maryland. It was formed by two men from the Church of Brethren who insured each others' homes and farms. The organization was called the German Baptist Brethren's Mutual Protective Association of Western Maryland and provided property insurance to members of the church.
In 1917 that changed when the association was incorporated under Maryland laws and began providing insurance to people outside of the church. Today it sells insurance in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington D.C. through independent insurance agents. BMIC is the largest farm insurance provider in Maryland offering insurance quotes to a wide swath of farmers and other customers.
Brethren Mutual Insurance focuses on personal insurance including home and auto insurance. In addition, they offer insurance policies to businesses and farms.
Policies are sold through local independent agents across their area, and the company still maintains its headquarters in Hagerstown. Regional insurance companies like Brethren Mutual often have a lower risk tolerance compared to larger industry giants, but they may also offer lower rates and friendly local service.
